Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment option used by more than 1.5 million patients in more than 45 nations worldwide. The treatment involves wearing an appliance that fits snuggly over your teeth and resembles clear braces. It is specifically designed for the patient’s mouth to gently move your teeth into the desired position and alignment. The appliance is similar to a mouth guard, but is more snug and molded to fit each patient’s mouth. The appliance is removable at home so that your teeth can be easily cleaned and the patient can eat whatever he or she chooses. Made with BPA-free plastic, Invisalign first appeared on the market in 1999. By 2003, the option became accepted practice in dental care.
It’s Easy to Use
Dr. Alena Spielberg takes impressions of your mouth and teeth and uses a specialized 3-D computer program to treatment plan your customized outcome. You will then receive your custom series of aligners. These aligners will correct your tooth position and fix your bite. These aligners are closely monitored by Dr. Spielberg throughout your treatment.
You’ll learn how to put on and remove the Invisalign appliances as well as how to properly clean and maintain them at home. Once the series of appliances is made, you take the entire series home and moves to progressively new appliances approximately every two weeks. Check-ups are scheduled approximately every six weeks so that Dr. Spielberg can monitor progress and answer any questions you may have.
Orthodontia treatment with Invisalign is a straightforward, easy process. Because there are no brackets involved, you don’t have to come in regularly for tightening appointments or the repair of broken brackets. In addition, because an Invisalign appliance is made of smooth, clear plastic, you won’t experience abrasive rubbing on the cheeks and tongue sores that are often experienced with other types of braces.
How They Work
Approximately every two weeks you’ll start using a new aligner. Each aligner is designed to move the teeth in question a very small distance toward the ideal position. Every time you begin with a new aligner, it takes over from where the previous aligner left off. It continues to apply mild pressure to the teeth, moving them toward the end goal.
Treatment length depends on the type of correction you need as well as how well you comply with Dr. Spielberg’s instructions for wearing the appliance. The average treatment range is between 6 and 24 months, depending on these factors.
For the occasional tooth that is angled in such a way that regular appliance control may not rotate it or move it correctly, Dr. Spielberg will use Invisalign attachments. These are tiny dots of a hardened material placed in specific locations on your tooth, so that additional control is applied when the Invisalign appliance is worn. These attachments are tooth-colored. Dr. Spielberg has an array of tooth shades to choose from in the attempt to minimize potential visibility. The placement of Invisalign attachments is non-invasive. This means you won’t need anesthetic numbing for placement or for removal, which is done with a small sanding technique.
The main advantages of Invisalign orthodontic treatment are:
- the reduced impact on your daily life compared to traditional braces
- quick, painless checkups
- no need to tighten the appliance
- it can be removed for meals, which means you don’t have to stop eating a long list of your favorite foods.
The changes to your life when you’re fitted with Invisalign are also minor: They include having a place to store the aligners while you’re eating and always having a small toothbrush nearby to clean your teeth after before putting the appliance back in place.
The Last Step
Once you complete your Invisalign treatment, the last step is the retainer. Historically, patients have been told that a retainer was only needed for a few months to a year after traditional braces were removed. This was found to be inaccurate and today, regardless of the orthodontia method used, a lifetime retention is required. Dr. Spielberg will fit you with a retainer to wear primarily at night. This is important to maintain your teeth’s alignment and protect your perfect smile.
Get the Smile You Want
Invisalign gives you the ability to obtain the perfect smile you want with minimal impact on daily life. Because of the clear color and snug fit of the appliance, most people won’t even notice the appliance when they talk with you. For patients who prefer to have a more discreet appliance, Invisalign provides the perfect alternative while producing a quality result.
